Industry Overview

The Construction industry in British Columbia, with its history of resilience and adaptability, has emerged from the last century into a brand new millennium and a completely revitalized economy bursting with opportunity.

Currently British Columbia is experiencing unprecedented economic growth. 2000 was the turning point and the construction sector is driving the ongoing prosperity for British Columbians. The construction industry is confronted with many new challenges and opportunities with new pressures expected to intensify as our labour force shrinks and demand increases.

15,000 - 30,000 more people are required over the next five years due to the continued effect of increased construction activity. The retirement of baby boomers will result in a drastic shrinkage of the skilled labour pool. Strong economic growth combined with diminished available labour is projected to continue out to 2031 and possibly beyond. To access resources relating to this issue, click here.

Contractor members are finding an increase in onerous clauses and overly complicated tenders as well as market conditions which are causing them to be far more selective in how and to whom they bid. Contractors realize it is critical to stay abreast of changes in industry standards and government procurement polices and processes.

Despite minor market fluctuations our industry can expect a healthy economy for the next 25 years. To paraphrase Charles Darwin - itīs not the strongest or even the most intelligent who are the most successful - itīs those with the best capacity to adapt who flourish.

As we look to the future we shield our eyes. Itīs bright out there.
